Follow the Leader is the 42nd and final episode of Sailor Moon R. It was preceded by Final Battle and followed by Star Struck, Bad Luck.

Plot

Wiseman has been defeated and both the present and the future have been saved. The Sailor Scouts wonder who should be the leader, and try to decide, though Serena and Luna are sure that Serena/Sailor Moon should still be the leader. Serena tells everyone that she saw two people dressed as Sailor Scouts, who ran away, and that she suspects they could be enemies pretending to be Sailor Scouts. She also tells them that she had a dream about a dark room with a mysterious scientist who resembles Melvin, and a woman with him. Lita also had the same dream.

They then talk about who should be leader. Several flashbacks are shown, such as Serena receiving her locket from Luna, fighting Cardian Racy, and the showdown with Rubeus and the Negamoon Sisters.

Raye reminds them of her performance at the concert, while Lita reminds them of how good she is at skating. Mina says she was actually a Sailor Scout before any of them were, and had her own video game. Amy reminds them of her battle with Bertie. Serena reminds them of her victories over Malachite and Rubeus, and they decide that they are stronger as a team, as flashbacks of the Sailor Scouts combining their powers to destroy Queen Beryl and Wiseman are shown, and that the possibility of a new enemy is the bigger threat.

Notes

Trivia

  • On several polls, this has been voted the worst episode of Sailor Moon by fans.
  • Lita and Mina both mention Jedite, but neither of them fought him, as he was killed 11 episodes before Sailor Jupiter appeared, which was 8 episodes before Sailor Venus first appeared.
  • This is one of the few episodes where there is no immediate threat (except for the possibility of a new enemy).
  • A few voice actors are replaced in this episode during the recaps to previous episodes because either the original actor was unavailable, or an unknown reason. John Stocker steps in to voice Malachite (originally Denis Akiyama), Queen Beryl is voiced by Jill Frappier (originally Naz Edwards), Racy is voiced by Maria Vacratsis (originally by an unverified actress), Genie of the Time Warp is also voiced by Maria Vacratsis (originally Loretta Jafelice), and Mistrust was voiced by Loretta Jafelice (originally Sabrina Grdevich).
  • The scenes showing Sailor Uranus, Sailor Neptune, Doctor Tomoe, and Kaorinite are all clips from Sailor Moon S.
  • Final TV episode of Terri Hawkes voicing Serena/Sailor Moon.
  • This is the last episode produced by DiC Entertainment.
  • This is the last episode to use Mercurius Script as the title-screen font.
