Geneon Entertainment Inc. (USA) (also known as Geneon Universal Entertainment) was the given name of the former Pioneer Entertainment (now NBCUniversal Entertainment Japan). Geneon Entertainment was a Japanese music, anime and home entertainment production and distribution enterprise headquartered in Akasaka, Minato, Tokyo, Japan. From its days as Geneon Universal Entertainment, Geneon has been involved in the production and distribution of several anime in Japan.
Geneon's North American branch, originally founded as Pioneer Entertainment, specialized in translating and distributing anime and related merchandise, such as soundtracks across the region. "Geneon" is a portmanteau of the English words, "gen" erate and "eon".
In September of 2007, Genon Entertainment announced its departure from the North American distribution market. In a press release, they detailed the release of anime under their licence following November 6, 2007 would cease completely.
In 2008, it was announced that Geneon Entertainment would be merging with Universal Pictures Japan. Feburary 1, 2009, the merger officially took place. For a time the company was recognized as Geneon Universal Entertainment On December 9, 2013, the company changed its name to the current NBCUniversal Entertainment Japan. Outside of Japan, the majority of NBCUniversal Entertainment Japan's anime titles are distributed in the Oceanic region by Universal Sony Pictures Home Entertainment Australia.
